Nourishment
Fresh Figs
Why I love them: Figs are one of my family’s favourite fruits and a staple of the Greek kitchen. Eating them fresh has always been one of the highlights of our trips to Cyprus.
And happily, they're still in season. Naturally sweet and packed with tiny seeds, figs are a good source of fibre and provide nutrients including potassium, magnesium and calcium, as well as plant compounds such as polyphenols.
Yesterday I had them with French toast for brunch at Aya Cooks in Limassol: Eleni Katalanos’ Tsoureki French Toast. Sweet brioche style bread called Tsoureki with cardamom sugar, whipped Anari cream (a Cypriot ricotta style cheese made from the whey left over from making halloumi), fresh figs, honey and fig-leaf oil.
It was SO good, and a recipe I'll be attempting to recreate to the best of my abilities when I'm back in London.
Available at: Fresh figs are widely available at supermarkets, greengrocers and Mediterranean food shops while they're in season, usually until around mid-October.
STYLE
Le Bon Shoppe Socks
Why I love them: Socks aren’t something I used to give much thought to, but in recent years they've really come into their own as an easy way to add colour and interest to an outfit. Maybe it's because we're wearing more casual clothes and trainers, but suddenly the right pair of socks peeking out feels like part of the look.
I've been on the hunt for socks that work with my wardrobe and are made with natural fibres, and I've heard so many good things about Le Bon Shoppe from you guys that I'm finally joining the club!
Now the question is: which colour do I start with?! This pink and green pair from their new collection have definitely grabbed my attention.
Available at: Selected independent retailers online and in store across the UK.
Wellbeing
Making lunch the main meal
Why I love it: Since being in Cyprus, we've naturally fallen into the habit of eating our bigger main meal at lunchtime and something lighter in the evening, and I've really got used to it.
Lunch here is a proper social affair. My extended family gathers around the table, we take turns cooking and, whatever we're eating, there will inevitably be salad, bread, olives and yoghurt alongside it.
I particularly like having heavier dishes, pulses and lentils at lunchtime because it gives my body the rest of the day to digest them, rather than going to bed a few hours later feeling overly full.
And it turns out there may be something in eating earlier too. Research into meal timing suggests that eating more of our daily intake earlier, rather than later, may have benefits for glucose control.
That's particularly interesting to me personally. Having had two-thirds of my pancreas removed during my cancer surgery, looking after my blood-sugar health is something I'm conscious of.
I'm not sure I'll ever become someone who eats a big breakfast every day, but swapping my lunch and dinner around feels much more doable and it's something I'm going to experiment with when I'm back in London.
HOME LIFE
The autumn home reset
Why I love it: I love that point in the year when the weather starts to change and home begins to feel like somewhere you want to retreat into again. But preparing your home for autumn doesn't necessarily mean buying anything new.
For me, it's more about bringing things back into rotation. Washing the blankets and throws that have been tucked away all summer. Switching on lamps in the evening instead of relying on overhead lighting. Moving candles back to the places I'll actually light them and generally making the rooms we spend the most time in feel a little warmer.
I do the same in the bathroom. Bath salts come back out, and I swap fresh, summery scents for deeper, warmer fragrances. I was given a gorgeous body wash with deep amber notes for my birthday back in July and I've deliberately saved it - now that the weather has changed, I can't wait to finally start using it.
Even the kitchen starts to shift. I'm more inclined to have something slowly simmering on the hob, roast vegetables, make soups and return to the recipes I haven't really thought about all summer.
It's really just about looking at what you already own and bringing the things that make autumn feel good back into rotation.
No shopping required.
Beauty
Korres Shower Gels & Body Milks
Why I love them: I couldn't be in Cyprus and not include Korres. I've been loyal to this Greek brand for over 20 years, going back to a time when finding beauty products made with natural ingredients wasn't nearly as easy as it is today.
Korres uses Greek botanicals and ingredients throughout its formulas, but while I've never found its facial skincare particularly suited to my skin, I've adored the shower gels and body products for years.
The shower gels leave my skin feeling clean without drying it out, and I particularly love the Body Milks because they're moisturising but still lovely and light. I find the Body Moisturisers too thick for my upper body, especially when I'm hot flushing, although I do like them on my legs where my skin appreciates something richer.
But it's the fragrances that keep me coming back. They're fresh, beautiful and incredibly nostalgic to me, so much so that I often don't bother wearing perfume afterwards.
There are so many scents to discover; it's really about finding the one that transports you to a Greek beach, a day in the village or an evening in the mountains.
Available at: Korres online and selected pharmacies and beauty retailers in the UK.
